Donations needed to repair snow damage at Stratford animal shelter

The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth (HSKWSP) is appealing to the public for financial help to cover costs from severe winter weather that left it with a hefty repair bill.

The non-profit organization said heavy snow that fell last season caused extensive damage to its facility in Stratford. The centre's roof, heating exhaust system, exterior ductwork, and its outdoor dog run were significantly damaged. The dog run, a critical space that allows pooches in the care of the shelter to enjoy time outdoors, was deemed unsafe and unusable.

"For the safety and well-being of the dogs in our care, we had to act quickly to begin repairs,” Humane Society CEO Victoria Baby said in a statement. “This space is vital for their physical and mental health while they wait to find loving homes”.

Baby noted that while insurance will cover part of the costs of the necessary repairs, the humane society is now facing a $10,000 shortfall. If the money isn't made up, other programs and services to be offered this year could be affected.

"Every donation will go directly toward recovering the cost of this essential space so we can continue providing the highest standard of care to the animals who need us most,” said Jordan Baker, the organization's director of development.

Anyone wishing to donate to fund the rebuild of the outdoor dog run can do so online at CanadaHelps or kwsphumane.ca.
