West Perth is taking the next steps to fully decommission the old Logan Landfill site.
Director of Operations Adam Ryan says the site was closed to the public and stopped accepting waste in 2011. However, once a landfill is closed, there is a process to follow to fully shut down the site.
"With landfill sites you need to continue to monitor for any inconsistencies in ground water or leachate coming off of the site. We've been continuing to do that and while doing that this year, we've been speaking about doing the final closure plan," Ryan explained.
Ryan adds there's a 20 year grace period where a municipal government must continue monitoring the site for any potential ground issues. He says council and staff are ready to close in on final site prep.
"We figure now is the time to do that, to move ahead. We know that we will not need the site for any future landfill use, so we did decide that we're gonna create a closure plan and work on that in next year's budget. So we'll be looking to shut down the site and again, it's past its useful life," noted Ryan.
If all goes well, the site could be opened up to other land uses.
"So we will monitor the site to ensure that anything that's underground is not, I guess, spreading underground. So we'll continue to monitor that site, but once that 20 year time frame is done, that land will be available for use again in the future," Ryan concluded.
