Six arrested, nearly $100,000 in drugs recovered in Owen Sound

Six people are facing charges after a months-long investigation into suspected drug trafficking activities in the City of Owen Sound and Grey and Bruce Counties.

The investigation, called Project Backboard, was launched by the OPP West Region Intelligence Unit, in partnership with the Grey Bruce Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and the Owen Sound Police Service, back in February.

On April 24, police executed three simultaneous search warrants all within the City of Owen Sound.

Investigators seized an estimated $99,878 worth of drugs, including 469 grams of suspected cocaine, 43 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 85 grams of suspected fentanyl, 331 suspected oxycodone pills, and 13 grams of suspected MDMA.

Along with the drug seizures, investigators confiscated $13,500 in cash and various assets, including multiple cell phones, tablets, a computer, packaging equipment, a currency counter, digital scales, and a loaded 9mm handgun.

A 20-year-old Hamilton man is facing charges including four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police also charged a 64-year-old man, a 59-year-old woman and a 49-year-old woman, all of Owen Sound, with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

A 46-year-old Owen Sound man was charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order, while a 45-year-old Owen Sound woman faces a charge for possession of a controlled substance.

In a release, Owen Sound Police said "this is a significant disruption to drug trafficking operations in our region. Removing these substances and firearms from our streets will have a direct, positive impact on community safety."
