North Perth preparing to launch tree planting program

North Perth is looking to introduce a tree sale this year to help expand the local tree canopy.

Mark Hackeyy, the municipality's manager of environmental services, says what the program will really focus on is trees for private landowners.

"The municipality has been doing a lot of planting on municipal property, but in order to expand our tree cover or tree canopy, we're hoping to encourage people to plant on their private property," Hackett explained.

Details will be shared soon on where landowners can go to apply online to get trees for their properties. The trees will also come with a full kit.

"Not only will you get a tree, you'll also get all the things you need to plant a tree. So instructions, a stake, coco mat for cover and mulch, things like that. So there's a number of things you'd get to encourage the successful life of the tree," said Hackett.

Hackett adds that they're looking at doing the tree distribution and planting initiative later this year.

"We're hoping to do the planting in the fall of this year. We did receive some funding from the Perth County Stewardship Fund, which we're excited about, to allow us to be able to put this type of a program together," added Hackett.

More details will be shared soon by the Municipality of North Perth regarding the online portal and how to sign up to get your trees if you're interested in planting some.
