Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated threats about annexation, a new poll suggests most Americans are not interested in expanding their country to include Canada.
Angus Reid conducted an online survey between February 27 and March 3 of 2,005 Canadians and 2,005 Americans.
Sixty per cent of Americans polled are not interested in annexing Canada, while 32 per cent would only be if Canadians were interested in joining the United States.
Even 44 per cent of Trump supporters are not interested.
"Shark Tank and Dragon's Den personality Kevin O'Leary recently opined about the desire of Canadians to join the United States, stating half of Canadians would be interested," said the pollster. "We'd love to know where Mr. O'Leary is finding his data."
Canadians continue expressing opposition to giving up their sovereignty, and more are taking Trump's threats seriously.
Nine out of ten Canadians oppose annexation, although one in five Conservative voters say they want to join the U.S. If the Liberals win the next federal election, 33 per cent said they would vote yes if there was a referendum.
The percentage of those taking annexation threats seriously climbed 22 percentage points since January to 54 per cent.
As for the Americans who responded, 22 per cent thought Trump was serious in January, but 35 per cent do now.
The poll is considered accurate +/- 2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
