OPP host first annual Kincardine Polar Plunge

Members of South Bruce OPP will be "Freezin' for a Reason," as they host the first annual Kincardine Polar Plunge along with several community partners.

The first annual Kincardine Polar Plunge will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, at the UBC Local 2222 building at 385 Queen St.

Constable Matt Thorpe said OPP members and residents will be taking the chilly challenge for a good cause.

"We'll be taking an icy dip into a waste disposal bin and raising funds for Special Olympics Ontario," Thorpe explained. "The donations go towards the supporting programs and events for the Special Olympics and Olympians. Overall, just to spread messages of acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities."

The fundraiser will help provide resources and opportunities for 23,000 Special Olympics Ontario athletes across the province.

Thorpe pointed out that five teams and several individuals were ready to brave the frigid water. But he said you can also support the cause while staying warm and dry.

"Make a donation, either in person at the event or online to any one of the teams or in your own name," Thorpe continued. "And if you don't want to take a dip in the water, feel free to come watch. I know there'll be several individuals that will be wanting to see the local police suffer a little bit and freeze for a short period of time before we can warm up again."

So far, the Kincardine event has raised $1,760 toward its $5,000 goal. Anyone who wants to get involved or make a donation can visit www.polarplunge.ca/kincardine
