Georgian Bluffs has introduced a new Short-Term Rental Accommodation (STRA) Licensing Program, and STRA operators can now apply through the online licensing portal. Under the new regulations, all short-term rental operators in Georgian Bluffs are required to obtain a license.
The program was set up to establish clear guidelines and ensure responsible management of short-term rental properties within the Township.
“The introduction of this licensing program is a significant step in managing short-term rentals in a way that respects both property owners and the wider community,” said Brittany Drury, Deputy CAO and Director of Corporate Services. “The online portal makes the process simple and efficient, helping operators comply with the new regulations.”
Township Communications Specialist Hailey Thomson said the township conducted extensive consultation with STRA operators, local businesses, and community members before establishing the new regulations.
She added the goal is to enhance safety, accountability, and neighbourhood well-being. She pointed out the program was developed to ensure rental properties meet essential safety and operational standards while minimizing potential disruptions for neighbours.
"Making sure that all of our visitors and all of our property owners know their responsibilities and are able to integrate seamlessly with the community," she explained. "You know, enjoy the beautiful natural amenities that we have and also understand the bylaws that we operate under. You know, keeping noise down, picking up litter, making sure the area stays beautiful and enjoyable for everybody who comes to visit."
To assist applicants, the township has created a range of support materials to help simplify the licensing process and ensure compliance with the requirements.
"We're asking people to get their registrations in by March 1, because that gives us time to process the applications," Thomson continued. "We have an inspection process to ensure residences have proper fire suppression and site layout. So we're hoping to get that started by March 1, so that we can launch for the beautiful summer months."
The licensing portal allows property owners to apply for, renew, and manage their STRA licenses.
