Hanover resident loses over $40K to romance scam

A so-called romance scam has cost a Hanover resident more than $40,000.

Hanover police were contacted by the resident this week.

Investigators determined the fraud happened over several years and involved the resident sending the fraudster VISA gift cards and crypto currency through an app called "trust wallet."

The investigation is ongoing.

Police are using the incident as a reminder to the public to stay vigilant to prevent these types of scams.

"Scammers will continue to prey on people, often tugging on their emotions to defraud them of their hard earned money. Please help educate your family and friends to safeguard them from becoming a victim," Police Chief Christopher Knoll said.
