Ontario Premier Doug Ford says his government is prepared to fight back against any tariffs from incoming U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ford released a statement on Sunday ahead of Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday. One of his first decisions in office is expected to be the imposing 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods due to concerns he has with the country’s border security.
While he congratulated Trump on the start of his second term in office, Ford explained any decisions to hurt Canada won’t be taken lightly.
“As Premier of Ontario, if President Trump’s tariffs make retaliation necessary, I will stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of Team Canada to fight back using every tool in our toolkit,” he said.
Ford explained he would support federal tariffs as a first line of retaliation. He added the province could also introduce its own measures to combat any U.S. tariffs.
“We will make decisions about when and how to implement provincial retaliatory measures in collaboration with the federal government as they lead Canada’s response,” said Ford.
Ford also took time in his statement to express his desire for the two countries to work together to create two of the richest, safest, and most secure places in the world.
