Intense lake effect snow squalls tonight into Wednesday.

Hazards:
Locally heavy snowfall with total accumulations of 20 to 40 cm.
Peak snowfall rates of 5 to 10 cm per hour.
Reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and local blowing snow.

Timing:
This evening through Wednesday afternoon.

Discussion:
Heavy lake effect snow squalls off Lake Huron will continue tonight. Northwesterly winds gusting to 50 km/h may result in local blowing snow, predominantly for exposed areas near Lake Huron. Lake effect snow will weaken and move out of the area Wednesday afternoon.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Road closures are possible.

Saugeen Conservation has replaced its January 7 Flood Watch with a Flood Outlook for the Main Saugeen River and tributaries in West Grey.Ice removal below the Durham Lower Dam has stabilized water levels and improved river conditions. However, extreme cold temperatures expected on January 19, 2025 could lead to frazil ice formation, depending on the extent of ice cover between Durham and Priceville.Officials will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates if conditions change. SVCA staff and the Municipality of West Grey say they both remain focused on public safety.
