Careless smoking blamed for Hanover street fire

A small fire on a Hanover street was caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette.

The blaze broke out in some garbage that was placed at the curb on 10th Street on Thursday night. A passerby was able to extinguish the flames before emergency services arrived.

No damage was reported.

Hanover police with the assistance of the fire department and video surveillance from the area were able to determine the fire was accidentally sparked by a cigarette.

"This incident serves as a good reminder of the dangers of careless smoking and the responsibility everyone has to ensure every flame is properly extinguished," Police Chief Christopher Knoll said in a post on social media. "Anything less can have devastating results."
