The Grey Sauble Conservation Foundation’s Malcolm Kirk Environmental Award is making a global impact through the work of Alex Adair, a 19-year-old conservationist from Owen Sound.
In 2023, Adair received the $2,000 award, which helped him pursue a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at the University of Guelph and conduct critical research abroad.
Adair, deeply rooted in Grey Bruce’s natural landscapes, has been an active conservation advocate. His local efforts include working as an Assistant Fisheries Technician with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, volunteering as a Turtle Tracker, and serving as a Steward for Ontario Nature.
This summer, Adair expanded his conservation work internationally, joining a University of Guelph-led research team in Madagascar’s Ankarafantsika National Park. For three months, he collected data on critically endangered lemurs, analyzed parasite loads, and conducted behavioural studies in one of the world’s most biodiverse but threatened ecosystems.

Madagascar’s lemurs face severe threats from deforestation, poaching, and climate change, with 98 percent of species at risk of extinction. Adair’s work underscores the urgent need for conservation efforts locally and globally.
“The Malcolm Kirk Environmental Award from the Grey Sauble Conservation Foundation, along with other local and provincial supports, have helped me pursue my education in wildlife biology and make a real impact,” said Adair. “I encourage anyone passionate about conservation and supporting young environmentalists to consider donating to the Grey Sauble Conservation Foundation. Their support helps future environmentalists who are passionate about protecting our natural world.”
The Grey Sauble Conservation Foundation raises funds for conservation initiatives and environmental education throughout Grey Bruce. Donations help support awards like the Malcolm Kirk Environmental Award and programs delivered by the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority.
