Panel of judges hears Durham Hospital case

The Municipality of West Grey finally had its day in court over the removal of inpatient beds from the Durham hospital.

Legal counsel for West Grey delivered arguments this week to a three-judge panel, as the Municipality pushes for a judicial review of South Bruce Grey Health Centre’s decision to remove all in-patient beds from the Durham Hospital.

West Grey also put forward a motion requesting the return of the beds to the Durham Hospital campus.

Mayor Kevin Eccles first announced the plan to legally challenge the decision at Queen's Park back in May.

SBGHC has filed its own motion requesting that the courts dismiss the application for review, on the grounds that it is governed by an independent Board of Directors, with full authority to make internal decisions on hospital operations.

The panel heard arguments from both sides and has reserved judgment at this point. It will be reconvening over the coming weeks to review materials and prepare a judgement.

The Municipality of West Grey says it is hopeful to have a decision before the end of the year.
