Canada's newest toonie pays tribute to the Royal Canadian Air Force's (RCAF) century-long contribution to the county.
The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled the special $2 circulation coin to commemorate the air force's 100th anniversary at a ceremony at Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg. The toonie, which began circulation on Wednesday, has been designed to highlight the historic milestone and recognize the service of all RCAF personnel, according to the Crown corporation.
While the front of the coin has the face of King Charles III, the reserve depicts aircraft that have played significant roles in supporting the RCAF over the last century. Designed by Canadian illustrator Pui Yan Fung, the inner core features the RCAF roundel above a Model H of the CC-130 Hercules, a mainstay of the air force for more than 60 years. Eight current and historical other aircraft appear on the outer ring and include the Finch Mk. II, CSR-123 Otter, F-86 Sabre Mk. 6, CF-100 Canuck Mk. 5, the CT-114 Tutor, CC-115 Buffalo, CF-188 Hornet, and CH-146 Griffon helicopter.
“The Royal Canadian Air Forces belongs to all Canadians and in our centennial year, we are pleased to partner with the Royal Canadian Mint to showcase some of the aircraft that have contributed to training and security at home and around the world,” Lieutenant General Eric Kenny, the commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force, said in a statement. “As Canadians go about their day, they will soon carry with them a reminder of the iconic aircraft that have carried our aviators past and present over the last century. Like a new coin, the future of your air force is bright.”
The RCAF was created in April 1924, providing Canada with a permanent full-time air force. Throughout its 100 years of service, it has supported the country's defence, contributed to international peacekeeping efforts, and fostered innovation in aviation. It also aided in search and rescue operations and supported international communities in the wake of natural disasters.
In addition to public circulation, the mint is also selling a commemorative collector keepsake card featuring both the coloured and uncoloured versions of the circulation coin for $14.95. It can be purchased online at www.mint.ca/RCAF or at participating Canada Post outlets.
