Three people rescued after canoe capsized in Lake Huron

Lifejackets helped to keep three people afloat until help arrived after their canoe capsized in Lake Huron.

The South Bruce OPP Marine Unit was called by concerned family who reported their loved ones failed to return from a canoe trip off the shore of Boiler Beach Road in Huron-Kinloss just after 8:30 p.m. last Friday.

A search was launched and the Kincardine Volunteer Auxiliary Coastguard Unit found the trio in the water where they had been swimming for over an hour after their vessel overturned. All three were wearing lifejackets, police said.

The three were brought back to shore and one was taken to hospital for observation.

The incident has again prompted police to remind the public of the importance of wearing a lifejacket when heading out onto the water.

"The only lifejacket that will save your life is the one you are wearing," police said.

It is also recommended boaters keep other safety equipment on board, such as a reboarding device, buoyant heaving line, manual bilge pump, and flares.
