Belgrave farmer convicted for unlicensed milk plant operations

A Belgrave farmer has been fined $4,500 for operating a milk plant without a license.

The Ministry of Agriculture discovered unpasteurized milk, cheese, and butter was being distributed from a farm on Marnoch Line between June and August 2023, violating the Milk Act.

An investigation was launched in June 2023 after receiving a tip about the unlicensed operations. A search warrant executed on August 17, 2023, confirming the illegal activities.

The farmer was convicted on April 29, 2024, and fined $1,500 for each of three counts, plus a victim fine surcharge.

The Milk Act sets stringent standards for the production, processing, and distribution of milk and milk products in Ontario. It mandates licensing for all dairy operations to ensure products are safe for consumption. Violations can result in fines up to $2,000 per day for first offenses and up to $10,000 per day for subsequent offenses. The Act aims to protect public health by ensuring all dairy products meet established safety and quality standards.
