Courthouse square redesign won't feature reverse angle parking

Reverse angle parking will not be a part of the Goderich Courthouse Square redesign when the project is completed in a few years.

Members of the design team of BM Ross and GSP Group presented a streetscape plan to council this spring, one that would improve accessibility in the square, increase greenspace and make better use of the 11.5 m wide road that circles the courthouse.

Mayor Trevor Bazinet says he's received lots of feedback on the design already.

"There's good and bad with anything," he said. "So we still have the opportunity of having some time to play around with what we like and what we don't like and really put together what we believe is something wonderful that's going to last our town for the next 60 to 80 years."

The aspect Bazinet has heard about more than anything though, was the suggestion from urban planners to incorporate reverse angle parking around the square.

Consultants say it's safer not only for drivers pulling out of parking spaces, but also for loading and unloading a vehicle.

Bazinet says based on the feedback he's received, the Town won't be moving forward with the idea.

"The thing with Goderich is, it's a unique space, it's not a Main Street like Bayfield or Central Huron. So if you have people stop and they have to reverse into an angled spot, then what if they have to pull out again to correct themselves?" he said. "The summertime, our square is busy so we're not quite ready to do that part of the conceptual drawing yet."

However, Bazinet said if the community ever changes it's mind, it's a quick fix.

"The way it's aligned now, you can just change the painted lines to make it reverse angle," he said. "Right now, we've heard the community, not too many people are happy about, so we're just going to keep the parking the way it is, with angle parking, pulling in forward."
