Loblaws renovating stores, opening new ones

If you shop at the Real Canadian Superstore, Zehrs, Valu-Mart, or No Frills, many of those stores are about to get a fresh new look.

Loblaw Companies Limited plans to invest more than $2-billion by converting and renovating nearly 600 grocery stores while opening or relocating 38 others.

Fourteen new stores will be in Ontario, while 330 will be renovated or converted.

Overall, two-thirds of the new locations across Canada will be Shoppers Drug Marts.

"The company's capital investments this year are expected to create thousands of jobs and see it grow and improve its store network," read Loblaw's statement.

The company already employs 220,000 Canadians, and the investment could create another 6,000 jobs in retail, supply chain, technology, and construction.

The company said its investments over the past five years focused on digital innovation and technology to keep up with changes in the grocery store industry. The changes in 2023 will modernize the supply chain, enhance the retail experience, and expand Loblaw's presence in under-serviced communities.

"For decades, Loblaw has made significant investments in the Canadian economy, creating jobs and opportunities in our company and others," said President and Chair Galen G. Weston. "By growing and innovating, we are advancing the priorities that matter to customers, outstanding shopping experiences, affordable options, and support for their health and wellness."
