YMCA Peace Medal presented posthumously to Sharif Rahman

The YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce has awarded the annual Peace Medal posthumously to Sharif Rahman.

Earlier this year, Rahman was the victim of a brutal assault outside his restaurant The Curry House in Owen Sound, after which he tragically passed away as a result of the injuries he sustained.

April Robinson, Manager of Communications & Fund Development for YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce, says the award represents something very special and is very fitting for Rahman's legacy.

"So each year, YMCAs across Canada celebrate acts of peace by recognizing individuals and groups who, without any special resources, status, wealth or position, have demonstrated a commitment to building peace within their communities or communities elsewhere in the world," Robinson explained. "So during Peace Week, which usually takes place during the third week of November, local Peace Makers will receive recognition and a medal at the Peace Medal ceremonies across Canada."

Sharif was nominated by Rick MacLeod Farley, Joan Beecroft, and Gregg Carroll, who collectively painted a vivid picture of Sharif's peacemaking work and the profound impact he had on the community. Described as the "sun in his own solar system of family and friends," Sharif's positive and peaceful energy left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

Robinson says it became very clear that Rahman left behind a very powerful legacy of compassion and care for the community.

"Sharif's commitment to building and strengthening community connections was evident through his involvement in various committees and boards, leaving a lasting impression in our community," Robinson shared. "There was an overwhelming community response to Sharif's passing, and it was highlighted in the depth of his positive involvement in the region. He really empowered and touched the lives of hundreds, both locally and globally."

Noted throughout the official press release, Robinson adds it's very clear that Sharif Rahman helped better everyone's experiences in Owen Sound and beyond.

"The outpouring of grief across the community demonstrated the depth of Sharif's positive involvement in the lives of the people around him," added Robinson.

Police continue to search for the three men believed to be responsible for Rahman's death. If you have any information, please contact Owen Sound Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

The YMCA's official release offered more insight into the award and how Sharif Rahman was a perfect recipient for this year's Peace Medal:

He served on the Grey County Economic Development Committee, the Board of DIA Owen Sound, and was a dedicated member of the YMCA.

• Empathy: Sharif demonstrated compassion by advocating for global and local issues, supporting newcomers to Canada, and helping others navigate challenges such as immigration and employment.

• Advocacy: Without seeking the spotlight, Sharif quietly worked for positive change, leading by example and supporting friends, family, and strangers alike.

• Community: Sharif's commitment to building and strengthening community connections was evident through his involvement in various committees and boards, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

• Empowerment: The overwhelming community response to Sharif's passing highlighted the depth of his positive involvement in the region. He empowered and touched the lives of hundreds, both locally and globally.

The 2023 YMCA Peace Medal was presented to Sharif's family on his behalf, acknowledging his lasting legacy of compassion and care for the community. His name will be added to the Peace Medal Recipient Frame, a permanent display at the YMCA, honouring those who have made significant contributions to building peace.

In accepting the award on behalf of Sharif, Shayela, wife of the late Mr. Rahman, expressed gratitude for the community's support and highlighted Sharif's unwavering dedication to the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce. The ceremony also recognized Sharif's impact as a past Board member, YMCA member, employer, and supporter of various YMCA programs and activities.
