Owen Sound police lay charges after downtown "street performance"

Two men have been arrested for their part in a driving incident Owen Sound police are calling a "street performance."

Early Sunday morning at about 2:40 a.m., police say a large group of people gathered in the area of 2nd Avenue and 9th Street East in downtown Owen Sound.

A man driving a pickup truck  "attempt[ed] to impress the crowd," reportedly bringing his vehicle to a stop, performing a brake burnout which created a cloud of black smoke, and then accelerating southbound well over the speed limit of 40 kilometres per hours.

Police say an officer who observed the scene caught up with the pickup truck atop Greenwood Cemetery Hill after pursuing the vehicle for a few blocks.

A roadside alcohol screening device was administered to the driver which police say registered that he was over the legal limit. When the officer attempted to arrest the 20-year-old man for impaired driving, a person in the passenger seat intervened "aggressively and physically," according to police. The second person was also arrested and taken into custody for obstructing an officer.

When taken to a local police station, police confirmed that the driver had blown twice the legal limit of alcohol. His truck was towed and impounded for seven days, his license suspended for 90 days, and the 20-year-old man is also facing criminal charges.

The accused, both residents of Grey County, have been released from police custody and are scheduled to appear at the Owen Sound Court of Justice in the coming weeks.
