Federal NDP wants a parliamentary committee investigation of rising food prices

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has called for a parliamentary committee investigation into rising food prices and on the profits of major grocery stores.

He says families are feeling the pinch, and having a hard time affording food.

"It's no surprise. In Canada, we've seen price fixing in the past. In 2018 we were pretty shocked to learn that there was price fixing going on with the cost of bread, so we're no stranger to the potential that there is something going on with the price of food," Singh explained. "And we are deeply concerned because this is hurting Canadians. So we've pushed for an investigation, a probe, into the cost of food because we want to get to the bottom of this and stop it. Because families are struggling to buy their groceries to put food on the table."

Singh said grocery corporate profits are going up, but producers and workers are not seeing an increase.
