Huron County trail report shows tunnel would be maintained by county

The Economic Development Director for Huron County says tunnel work on a road that meets the G2G Trail west of Blyth will start once the money is raised.

Cody Joudry recently reported to Huron County council that the cost for the tunnel is estimated to be somewhere around $450,000.

Joudry says in 2018, the county ear-marked $50,000 and also received matching tourism funding but that's the extent of the county's commitment.

“Original plan was that G2G Inc. would campaign and raise that money, so we'll be having conversations with all of the parties about that, but generally speaking, the idea was that G2G would raise the money,” said Joudry.

Joudry adds because the county owns that section of road, it will also be responsible for maintenance of the tunnel.

“But looks like the ownership is, in fact, the county, because we own the road and, in the absence of anything, we would own what's under it. So what the county's committed to is, if the money can be raised, then we would do the construction and the maintenance,” added Joudry.

He points out the G2G Trail has become an asset as far as attracting hikers and cyclists into Huron County.
