The United States has announced plans to reopen land border crossings with Canada to fully vaccinated travellers next month.
The news came in late Tuesday night from New York Democrat Congressmen Brian Higgins.
"At long last, there is action by the U.S. to open the doors and welcome back our Canadian neighbours beginning in November," read a statement by Higgins. "This is good news for businesses and families that have suffered under the continued border shutdown."
While proof of vaccination will be required, the CDC will have to announce further details on if that includes Canadians who received mixed doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, as well as an Astra-Zeneca vaccine.
Higgins added more information is expected to come Wednesday.
"For months now we've heard from businesses that are suffering and families distraught over the separation over the continued border shutdown. The sigh of relief coming from northern border communities following this announcement is so loud it can practically be heard from either end of the Peace Bridge," Higgins said referring to the bridge that connects Fort Erie, Ontario to Buffalo, New York.
Canadians have been barred from travelling to the U.S. by land since the pandemic started in March 2020, other than for essential reasons.
