Owen Sound Police will not engage in random COVID-19 enforcement stops

Owen Sound Police Service has said it will not be engaging in random person or vehicle stops after being given temporary authority by the Ontario government to enforce the stay-at-home order.

On Friday, the Ontario government announced that police will have the authority to stop cars and people in the street to ask why they are not home and ask for their address. A ticket upwards of $750 could be issued for those who refuse to answer.

"While we are still awaiting clarification from the Province regarding the new legislation, we will continue to engage with citizens, explain, educate and enforce as required," said Sergeant Tom Sullivan in a statement. "The number of citizen generated complaints continue to increase."

Sullivan said Owen Sound Police Service recognizes the challenges being faced in the province, as cases of COVID-19 soar and hospitalizations increase.

Still, many police boards across the province have said they will not be engaging in random stops, despite the province's announcement.
