Huron County sets up task force to look at support programs for the homeless

Huron County council has started forming a Task Force to deal with homelessness in the county.

Warden Jim Ginn says at this time the problem seems to be concentrated in Goderich and to a lesser degree, in South Huron, but he says it exists through the entire county, it's just less visible in a rural community.

"Obviously this problem is not isolated to us. It's relatively new to us, but cities have been dealing with these types of issues for a while, so we'll see what kind of solutions they've found and what's the most effective way to deal with the problem," said Ginn.

Ginn adds COVID-19 has compounded the problem because it's now more difficult for someone without a home to find a place to stay. And although there are programs in place, there are gaps.

"Depending on what the needs of the individuals are, if they fall into one of those programs it's fairly easy to solve. The problem often is that they fall between the cracks of different programs and that's what we need to have a look at, what funds are available, can we get more from the upper levels of government," added Ginn.

The Task Force will include Warden Ginn as well as councillors John Grace, George Finch, Bernie Bailey and Glen McNeil as well as community stakeholders.
