Residents in the Municipality of West Grey will have to bring large household items to the Bentinck landfill starting September 1.
Items such as unwanted furniture, treated wood or glued wood products are being banned from the Durham landfill in an effort to bolster composting.
The diversion will lengthen the life of the site and free up space to provide a centre for the composting program.
The Durham Landfill will continue to take non-treated wood, brush, recycling and bagged household garbage. A shredding machine is being brought in to reduce the pile of current items The material created will then be used as a cover for the landfill.
The Bentinck Landfill is located at 114079 Grey Rd. 3 and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“West Grey continues its efforts to be responsible stewards of the environment,” said Mayor Christine Robinson. “Diverting some of the larger landfill items from our Durham site .”
