One Hanover police officer could be in for a long recovery time after being attacked by dogs.
According to Hanover police, officers responded to a 7th Avenue apartment building at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday because of a dispute between a tenant and a building manager.
The 35-year-old suspect was arrested in the building's lobby after investigators determined he was wanted by several police services for various offences.
Police said that the man was allowed to return to his apartment as he was with his dog. When they reached the unit, the man reportedly tried to escape into the apartment.
"A struggle ensued that continued into the apartment, where the officers were viciously attacked by as many as three Cane Corso dogs," police said in a release. "The officers were eventually able to exit the apartment and were transported to the Hanover and District Hospital, where they were treated for a series of bites to their hands, arms and legs."
The two officers were released from the hospital after treatment. One of the officers sustained significant lacerations that may result in an extended recovery time, while the second officer was able to return to work after receiving only minor bite wounds, police said.
Police said that neither the suspect nor his girlfriend, a 30-year-old Hanover woman, attempted to stop the attack when it was happening. After the attack, the duo reportedly fled with the dogs in a van.
The woman was later arrested during a traffic stop south of Hanover. Police said she had the three dogs with her and that they were taken by animal control and placed into quarantine under the direction of Public Health officials.
The woman faces charges of accessory after the fact and obstructing a peace officer.
The man remains at large, police suspect he could be in the Greater Toronto Area. He faces charges including aggravated assault of a peace officer, two counts of assault of a peace officer, two counts of assault with intent to resist arrest, and escape from lawful custody.
