70th anniversary for Huron County Health Unit

The Huron County Health Unit celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

Public Health Manager Christina Taylor said the anniversary is significant because of the pending amalgamation with the Perth County Health Unit.

Taylor said the Huron County Health Unit was born on July 1st of 1949, with 12 staff members. She said one oddity at the time was that one of the original staff members was a public health vet.

"The vet would look at things like milk production and meat production and make sure that the animals weren't passing anything on to those around them," she said.

The original Huron County Health Unit moved into Kildonan House in Clinton in 1954 and moved to the current location around 1981.

Taylor said the issues have changed over the years.

"We are looking to understand things like vaping and how that's affecting our population, we're trying to understand what the new parameters around cannabis use are. We are also trying to encourage vaccinations for everyone," she said.
