All Avon Maitland schools will close if OSSTF members strike

The Avon Maitland District School Board warns families that if the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation hold a one-day walkout this Wednesday, the board will close all schools for safety reasons.

Yesterday the union warned members would hold a one day strike if a tentative agreement is not reached, then return to work on Thursday, December 5, 2019.

This would include both elementary and secondary schools because all of the office staff, Educational Assistants, Professional Student Services Personnel and our secondary teachers, and other support team staff belong to this bargaining unit.

Any out-of-school activities like field trips and Co-op placements would also be cancelled on that day. As a result, parents/guardians should make alternate arrangements for their children if this one-day strike goes ahead.

All day programming for school-aged children may be offered at the discretion of the child care provider, and parents should check ahead of time.

Child care and Early ON programming within schools will continue to operate.

Adult credit programs provided by the Centre for Employment & Learning will be cancelled but all other services such as Employment services and non-credit ESL classes will continue and sites will remain open.

OSSTF is in negotiations with the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Public School Boards' Association (OPSBA) to achieve new collective agreements for secondary teachers and education workers

That includes Educational Assistants, Designated Early Childhood Educators, Child and Youth Care Workers, school office clerical staff, Technical Resource Assistants, Information Technology support, Speech and Language Pathologists, Psychometrists, Mental Health Leads, and Attendance Counsellors.
