Saugeen Shores gets a cheque for sports park

Some of the money is in the bank for the proposed Lamont Sports Park in Port Elgin.

The community received a $250,000 cheque from Kraft Heinz Project Play today and the money will help with accessibility plans.

Mayor Luke Charbonneau said their motto going into the contest was everyone has the right to play.

"So we talked a lot, while we were reaching out to the community looking for nominations and for votes, about accessible features. About making sure it's a place that every person in our community, no matter what their mobility or accessibility needs are, that they can use Lamont Sports Park," Charbonneau told CKNX News. "It's part of the reason why we won. So I think it's really critical that we now see that through and use this money to help make it more accessible."

Charbonneau said at this point time the design plans are being finished up then the process will move on from there.

"This is going to be a multi-year project, it's going to be a big facility once it's totally complete and it's not something we are going to be able to build in on year. But I'm very hopeful we can get started in 2020," added Charbonneau.

Saugeen Shores was named the winner of the national contest back on October 21.
