North Huron council has approved an application to try and secure Investing in Canadian Infrastructure Program funding.
Director of Recreation and Community Services Vicky Luttenberger said they would like to secure the grant to help upgrade and refurbish the North Huron Wescast Community Complex in Wingham.
"We're also looking at improving the energy efficiency thereby installing some energy-efficient lighting, and enhancing the accessibility to the facility," she said.
Much like other ICIP applications, the provincial and federal government would cover nearly 74 per cent of the project if approved, with North Huron covering 26.67 per cent.
Luttenberger said on top of needed mechanical tweaks, they want to ensure accessibility is enhanced to create a better and more inclusive experience at the arena.
"Access to our showers and change rooms and dressing rooms for people who need assistance, or just making it easier for them to get in or out," said Luttenberger. "But also looking at improving overall access to the building."
Luttenberger says the cost of the project for the municipality would be quite manageable if the grant is approved.
"If approved, it could be as much as $840,000 to complete the project, which would equal out to the municipality putting up about $200,000, which we already have in reserves,"
