Police Presence At Family Health Organization Strike

There's a police presence on the picket line at the strike at the Owen Sound Family Health Organization.

At least four officers were posted to the scene today after numerous incidents over the past few weeks. A confrontation between strikers and cars trying to enter the property have resulted in injuries and damage to vehicles. OPSEU workers have been on strike since May 22.

OPSEU Regional Vice President Lucy Morton says new negotiations are tentatively scheduled for next week. She says that's a step forward.

"Being out here isn't good for anybody. It's certainly not good for the community in which we serve and what we want to do is just negotiate a fair, transparent, respectful collective agreement and get back to work as soon as possible," says Morton.

She says it's going to require compromise on both sides to solve the situation.

"It's going to take some give, it's going to take some healing from both sides but we'll get there we've done it before and we can absolutely do it again," says Morton.

Of the original 30 OPSEU strikers, only about 17 are left. They've been bolstered on the picket line by union members from other areas of the province.

In an email release, the Family Health Organization maintains it's been fair, reasonable and transparent in its dealings with the union and the employees.
