Goderich Mine Resumes Operations Wednesday

Unifor Executive Assistant Scott Doherty says they had to make a few compromises in negotiations with Compass Minerals to get the contract they wanted for the salt mine workers in Goderich.

But Doherty says overall they're happy with the deal that will see the workers start back to work Wednesday morning.

“We were able to get rid of the forced overtime, the 72-hour work week, we were able to save the pension and benefits, there's some assignment of work that we really didn't like but the members have said that it's ok and there's some changes in shift schedules that we're not really thrilled about, but the members have spoken and they're ok with the deal,” he says.

Doherty believes it's also a significant victory in the battle to get anti-scab legislation in Ontario.

“This is a major victory for the labour movement on how to fight back on anti-scab legislation that should be in place everywhere but it isn't, and we're gonna continue to fight for those things going forward," he says.

Doherty also says a lot of the credit for that goes to Goderich and the surrounding communities.

“We would not be here today if we did not have the support of the community.   We've had literally hundreds and thousands of people out on the line, they've supported us, they've done everything they can to support this mine and these workers that have been on strike," he says.
