Perth County council approved a celebratory symbol to be used for Canada's 150th anniversary next year.
A commemorative tartan, which has been in the works for around eight months, was given the go-ahead by council on Thursday. The tartan ad-hoc committee was overseen by Councillor Helen Dowd, who thought it was a great idea to not only help represent Perth County, but celebrate the national milestone.
"We thought for the 150th anniversary of Canada, that this would be a county-wide initiative that we could do to help people celebrate Perth County, and the bigger picture for Canada's 150th," she says.
Dowd says the committee took inspiration for the tartan from the original Perth County crest from the 1800s, and the newer edition from 2009. She says they are planning to have marketable merchandise based around the tartan as well.
"We are planning on having a tie made with it, scarves for women, and the material alone so people can buy it and make other garments out of it. We also plan on making blankets as well," says Dowd.
The design of the tartan will be unveiled in the near future.
