Morris Turnberry is installing Light Emitting Diode or LED streetlights starting this month.
The plan is expected to save the municipality about 68% on energy bills, and up to 80% on maintenance.
Real Term Energy is partnering in the project to upgrade 217 streetlights, which include recycling and a ten-year warranty.
The whiter cleaner targeted light will improve visibility and make roadways safer.
Upgrading to LEDs is also an environmentally conscious choice, for it will allow Morris-
Turnberry to reduce its emission of greenhouse gases by an estimated 9 metric tons per year: the equivalent of the carbon removed by 231 tree seedlings grown for ten years.
“This project initiated by the Council of Morris-Turnberry, in conjunction with Real Term Energy, has so many positive aspects. The very short pay back term, energy savings and substantial reduction of maintenance costs, will result in long term savings for Morris-Turnberry and our residents," says Mayor Paul Gowing.
