Saugeen Shores Police warns of obituary scam

Saugeen Shores Police are warning residents of a new scam making the rounds, one that is using a local obituary to bilk people out of money.

Police say the scam involves posting "fake" obituaries to several websites such as YouTube, Echovita and other third party websites. Scammers are stealing photos and information from real obituaries and creating their own which often include secondary links for viewers to click on.

According to police, once the secondary link is clicked it allows scammers access to your device and potentially any banking or personal information stored on it.

The fake obituaries may also ask for donations without the families consent or knowledge.

Saugeen Shores Police is encouraging people to ensure they only access obituaries from known and trusted funeral homes websites.
