Ingersoll resident loses $80K in Bitcoin scam

An Ingersoll resident is out $80,000 after falling victim to a cryptocurrency scam.

Oxford OPP were called to a home on John Street for the reported fraud on Wednesday morning.

According to investigators, the resident began investing in Bitcoin with an individual they met through a social media messenger site. The resident lost $80,000 before realizing it was a scam.

Police are using the incident as a reminder to the public to be vigilant and use caution when receiving unsolicited responses and requests.

"Frauds can occur many ways," police said. "If it feels wrong, it usually is."

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of fraud can call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
