Nazem Kadri is planning a party in London this weekend and everyone is invited.
The former London Knight and Colorado Avalanche centre is bringing the Stanley Cup to the city Saturday. As part of his day with the trophy, Kadri has announced a parade that will begin at the London Muslim Mosque on Oxford Street at noon. Kadri and the cup will travel east to Richmond Street with the parade coming to an end at Victoria Park around 12:45 p.m.
"Let’s get Richmond Street and Vic park packed up Saturday afternoon. Cups coming home," Kadri tweeted on Wednesday.
After the cup arrives in the downtown green space, there will be a ceremony to honour Kadri's achievement.
Kadri became the first Muslim to win the Stanley Cup when the Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in June. After three seasons in Colorado, Kadri became a free agent and signed a new seven year, $49-million contract with the Calgary Flames last week.
Fans were quick to express their excitement for Kadri and the cup on social media.
"Awesome that you’re starting at the mosque! That will be such a cool moment," one fan wrote.
"Mad respect and love for our man, Kadri! First Brown, #Muslim boy to win the Stanley Cup," wrote another excited Londoner.
In addition to bringing the cup to London, Kadri also plans to show it off in Toronto, the city where he began his NHL career in 2009 with the Maple Leafs. He played most of his OHL career with the London Knights after a trade from the Kitchener Rangers.
