No new COVID-19 cases, one recovery in London-area

After recording five new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, London and Middlesex County are back down to zero.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said on Monday there were no new cases of the virus confirmed in either the city or the county. That followed two newly confirmed cases on Sunday and three on Saturday. One of the cases confirmed over the weekend involved a staff member at a local long-term care facility.

The region's long-term care facilities have been outbreak free for several weeks.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the area since the start of the pandemic now sits at 646.

One more infected person has since recovered from the virus, increasing the total resolved cases to 576.

The death toll in London-Middlesex remains unchanged at 57 with no additional deaths since June 12.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit that oversees Elgin and Oxford counties, reported no new case of COVID-19 on Monday. Over the weekend that region saw four lab-confirmed cases - one on Saturday and three on Sunday. There have been 91 cases total between the two counties. The number of resolved cases has not changed since last Thursday, sitting at 80. There have been no COVID-19 related deaths in the region since July 3.

Ontario is reporting a slight drop in the number of daily COVID-19 cases following two days of case numbers in the 160s.

Public health officials said Monday there were 135 new laboratory-confirmed cases over the last 24 hours. That brings the province's total since the start of the pandemic to 37,739. On both Saturday and Sunday, more than 160 new cases were confirmed across the province.

"Locally, 28 of Ontario’s 34 public health units are reporting five or fewer cases, with 18 of them reporting no new cases at all," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted on Monday.

The regions with the bulk of the new cases include Peel with 35 and Toronto with 26.

There was only one additional death related to the virus in Ontario. That brings the province's total number of COVID-19 related deaths since the start of the year to 2,752.

The number of resolved cases has increased to 33,513.

A total of 21,000 tests for the virus were conducted across Ontario on Sunday, Elliott said.
