The London Police Service has maintained the trust of the public ahead of the national average, according to a new independent survey.
The results of the phone survey showed that 87 per cent of those surveyed trust and are satisfied with the London Police Service (LPS), which above the national rate of 73 per cent and 72 per cent respectively.
A total of 500 Londoners were surveyed over the phone between September 16 and 30, 2019 by Leger, an independent research firm. The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 4.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
The survey also found 79 per cent believe LPS is honest and transparent, and the same percentage felt London police are "concerned about people like me." Only nine percent of those survey had a negative opinion of the LPS, while 61 per cent have a good opinion and the other 30 per cent said they don’t know the LPS well enough to have an opinion.
"We are very pleased with these independent survey results,” said police Chief Steve Williams. “Maintaining the trust of the public is paramount to what we do and we know we can never take this for granted. The survey results speak to the efforts of the women and men of the London Police Service who have hundreds of contacts with members of the public every day and who work hard to deliver optimum service. I am very proud of our members.”
The findings also show that 43 per cent of respondents believe that crime has increased over the last two years, while 40 per cent believe the level has remained the same and eight per cent believe it has decreased. The actual number of criminal cases handled by the LPS is in line with what the majority of respondents believe, with the number increasing to 28,499 in 2018 from 26,079 in 2016.
