Wintry blast leads to more than 200 crashes

Provincial police are reminding drivers to slow down in winter weather after officers were called to more than 200 crashes across southwestern Ontario on Monday.

The area was under a winter weather travel advisory from Environment Canada when OPP began getting numerous collision reports. A school bus carrying 22 students in Oxford County was involved in one crash, while in another a vehicle collided with a snowplow. A police cruiser was rear-ended in Brant County while an officer was conducting a separate investigation.

"The good news, no injuries associated to any of those collisions," said Constable Ed Sanchuk. "The bad news, we still have people driving like it's a sunny, hot day out here."

Sanchuk recommended that drivers make sure their rides are winter-ready before hitting the road this time of year. Vehicles should be equipped with snow tires, a good set of windshield wipers, a full tank of gas and lots of windshield washer fluid, said Sanchuk.

During the thick of Monday's snowy weather, calls began coming into 911 for updated road conditions. Sanchuk urges people not to dial the emergency number for current road reports, instead, they should be calling 511 or logging onto 511on.ca.

"They will have an updated list of weather conditions as well as road conditions for you," said Sanchuk.

More snow is expected to arrive in the London region Tuesday afternoon. Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for London and Middlesex County with local snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm per 12 hours possible.

The flurries and snow squalls will continue into Wednesday.
