Police ID driver in LTC bus hit-and-run

Charges are pending in a hit-and-run crash that sent a city bus through the front of a London pet clinic.

London police announced on Friday that they have identified the driver of a silver Volkswagen Jetta that was involved in the incident at Oxford Street and Waterloo Street late Tuesday night. The name of that individual has not yet been released.

Police had been searching for the driver since a silver Volkswagen Jetta was spotted by an officer driving the wrong way on a side street around 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The officer tried to stop the vehicle near the intersection of Hyman Street and Waterloo Street, but the driver turned off the headlights and took off north on Waterloo Street.

The car then went through a red light at Waterloo and Oxford and slammed into an LTC bus, which was heading east on Oxford. The force of the collision sent the bus through the wall of the North London Neighbourhood Pet Clinic and into its front reception area. The Jetta driver then got out of the vehicle and took off on foot. Police searched the area immediately after the crash, but were unable to locate the person.

The bus driver suffered minor injuries in the crash. Damage is pegged at $610,000.
