Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman threw a solid game, but he didn't get any run support in Toronto's series finale against the Yankees. New York completed a three-game sweep of the Jays with a 2-0 win. The loss is Toronto's fifth defeat in its last six games.
Meantime, the Red Sox beat the San Diego Padres 7-2, so Boston is now one game ahead of the Blue Jays in the AL East standings.
Elsewhere, Shane Greene and Justin Wilson combined to give up four runs in the eighth as the Detroit Tigers lost 7-4 to the White Sox.
Detroit is one game back of Baltimore for the second AL wild card, and four-and-a-half games back of Cleveland for the lead in the AL Central.
