Top high school athletes in Chatham-Kent to be honoured

The Dr. Jack Parry Awards will be handed out on Tuesday, June 9.

The awards recognize the top graduating high school athletes in Chatham-Kent, who also excel in academics, while contributing to their schools and community.

Each high school nominates a male and female athlete, with the winners receiving a $1,000 post-secondary scholarship, which is provided by the Parry family.

The nominees will be honoured, and the winners announced, at a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the Ursuline College Chatham theatre.

Dr. Jack Parry was an anesthetist who won the outstanding male track athlete award in 1948 when he was part of Canada's 1948 Olympic Team. He was the MVP of the University of Western football team, and played halfback for the RCAF Hurricanes that won the 1942 Grey Cup. Dr. Parry was also a member of the London Majors baseball team and was scouted by the Cleveland Indians.

He was a pilot during the Second World War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Bravery beyond the call of duty.
