Symbolic funeral to honour victims of femicide

The Chatham-Kent Sexual Assault Crisis Centre (CKSACC) will host a somber event to mark the end of sexual violence prevention month.

"We're holding a symbolic funeral procession and memorial for the women and children lost to femicide in Ontario," said Linda Soulliere, Executive Director of the CKSACC. "We're still looking for more drivers to be part of the procession to display the names of the women and children that are lost."

The procession on Saturday, May 31 will make its way from 325 Grand Avenue East in Chatham to the courthouse at 425 Grand Ave. W. at 11 a.m.

The names of women lost to femicide will be put on the vehicles that will follow a hearse, provided by Alexander and Houle Funeral Home in Chatham.

"We have a list of 177 names of women who have been murdered," said Soulliere. "So we're trying to highlight this and trying to get the community involved, and to rally around the fact that so many women are in danger."

Once they arrive at the courthouse around 11:30 a.m. a memorial will honour some of the women.

"We're going to read some of the names and some of the circumstances surrounding their murder. We have some pictures of the women who have died, so it'll be an honouring for those women who lost their lives to femicide," said Soulliere.

More volunteer drivers are needed. You can reach out to the CKSACC, or meet at 325 Grand Ave. E. at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Anyone who does not have a vehicle but still wants to be involved is invited to line the procession route or meet at the courthouse for the memorial service.
