The Ontario Superior Court has ruled that Grey Sauble Conservation Authority (GSCA) is the rightful owner of all lands at Hibou Conservation Area near Leith, ending a years-long title dispute.
The issue began in April 2020 when a "For Sale" sign appeared on a northeastern section of the property, prompting concern from residents and a swift response from GSCA. The Authority later discovered another party had registered a title interest in the land and launched legal action.
On May 27, 2025, the court confirmed that GSCA holds full title to the disputed lands, extinguishing any competing claims.
GSCA CAO Tim Lanthier called the ruling a relief, saying it ensures Hibou remains a public space.
"We’re both delighted and relieved by this week’s Ontario Superior Court decision," said Lanthier. "After a long process, we’re proud to confirm that Hibou Conservation Area will remain a treasured public space for our community."
The 329-acre property on Georgian Bay was secured through community fundraising in the 1970s and has since remained a popular conservation area.
