Donations needed for displaced residents of large Chatham fire

Residents of Chatham-Kent wanting to donate to those who have been displaced following a fire at 99 McNaughton Avenue West in Chatham now have a few drop-off locations.

The municipality said many community members have inquired about donating items to those affected by the blaze and so three temporary donation drop-off locations have been set up with more locations to be added as they become available.

Drop-off locations currently include:

  • Betty Brite Dry Cleaners at 108 Keil Drive South in Chatham. Donations can be dropped off there from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. as well as Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

  • SkyLine apartment building at 150 Mary Street in Chatham. Donations can be dropped off in the bins inside the front door at that location between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - seven days a week.

  • SkyLine apartment building at 805 Grand Avenue West in Chatham. Items can be dropped off between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - seven days a week - in the donation bins inside the front door.

  • Emmanuel Baptist Church at 100 McNaughton Avenue West. Items can be dropped off Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the office at the back of the church starting Wednesday.

  • Christ Church at 80 Wellington Street West. Donations can be dropped off from Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and ring the bell upon arrival.

  • Trinity United Church in Wallaceburg at 750 Wellington Street. Donations will be accepted from Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the front entrance.

The municipality noted items needed include adult clothing for men and women, hygiene products, and food items.

"Many of the displaced residents are temporarily staying in hotel rooms and are not able to cook food," said the municipality in a statement.

Non-perishable food items such as peanut butter, fruit cups, apple sauce cups, crackers, cereal bars, granola bars, cereal, juice boxes, tea bags, instant coffee, sugar, and powdered creamer are needed, according to municipal officials.

The municipality said furniture items are not being accepted right now.

Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) at 405 Park Avenue East in Chatham is also seeking donations of dog food, cat food, and kitty litter for pets that are temporarily staying at PAWR.

The blaze at 99 McNaughton Avenue West happened Sunday morning.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire or the estimated dollar value of the damage caused.

Residents living in 90 of the 120 units at the municipally owned building were displaced.

Some residents suffered minor smoke inhalation and were treated on site, but no other injuries were reported.

It's unclear when the residents will be able to return to their units.
