A 28-year-old Chatham man has been charged with attempted murder and arson after a fire in Chatham that police say was intentionally set.
On Tuesday, Chatham-Kent police reported a tenant was discovered inside the building on Park Street on Sunday morning unconscious and hurt with visible injuries unrelated to the fire. He was taken to safety by Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue Services.
Police said the victim was transported to the hospital for medical attention, where it was determined that the injuries were life-threatening.
Police noted a male suspect was then identified and was arrested on Monday.
He has been charged with attempted murder, arson with disregard for human life, and break and enter.
No names have been released.
CK Police Public Information Officer Lynette Rosina told CK News Today they're unable to disclose specific details about the victim's injuries at this time.
Rosina also said police doesn't believe public safety is at risk after a string of violent crimes lately with murders in Erie Beach, Pain Court, Wallaceburg, Tilbury, and Chatham and several other attempted murders.
"We have thoroughly investigated or are investigating each case. Based on the evidence gathered, there is no indication that these incidents are connected. In each situation, the individuals involved were known or believed to be known to each other. Therefore, we do not believe there is a risk to public safety. There is no immediate need for heightened vigilance or concern. All are isolated incidents," noted Rosina. "As for the motives or contributing factors behind these crimes, we are working to gather all relevant information, but can not confirm that these incidents were caused by drug-related issues or mental health concerns."
