Health Canada has announced a recall of a drug that may have had oversized tablets distributed.
Pro Doc Limitée is recalling one lot of ten-milligram Donepezil tablets due to the chance that some bottles may contain oversized tablets. These tablets may involve three times the proper dose, resulting in serious reactions or health issues.
Donepezil is prescribed for various forms of Alzheimer's Disease.
"Higher than recommended doses Donepezil can result in cholinergic crisis, which is characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, salivation, sweating, slow heartbeats, low blood pressure, reduced breathing, loss of consciousness, and convulsions," read the notice from Health Canada. "Increasing muscle weakness is a possibility and may result in death if respiratory muscles are involved."
If you or someone you're caring for is taking Donepezil and they receive pills that appear larger than normal, return them to the pharmacy. The pharmacist will check it and provide a replacement if needed.
Pharmacists are asked to check bottles of ten-milligram Donepezil for oversized tablets before dispensing them and contact Health Canada if any are found.
If serious side effects are experienced, seek medical attention immediately.
