CK continues working to deliver new housing

Several housing projects are waiting for rezoning changes in Chatham-Kent and hope they have them soon to move forward with building.

The Planning Committee will be discussing rezoning Monday evening to build a new subdivision in Blenheim. Clarke and Nelson Developments Inc. wants to build single detached, townhouse, and apartment dwellings along with neighbourhood commercial and open space at Marlborough Street North and Nazarene Road in Blenheim.

Discussions will also take place to allow the construction of an apartment building just northeast of Chatham to go ahead. Chatham Seniors Care Inc. wants to redevelop the former St. Vincent Catholic School at 9399 McNaughton Line, which closed in June 2020, into a 36 unit apartment building.

The other development waiting for a rezoning amendment is a row house project at 35 Erie Street South and 12 and 18 Chestnut Street in downtown Wheatley.

The proposal is to build a one-storey, eight-unit row house project, but since it's very close to known wells and there's a potential for unknown wells, the applicant must unsure the land is safe before any building permits are issued.

"Should the presence of a well be discovered, the applicant is required to ensure that any improperly abandoned water wells discovered on the lands during development will be properly plugged in accordance with provincial requirements," the staff report stated.

A fourth development proposes to turn a chiropractic office at Marlborough Street North and McGregor Street in Blenheim into four new bachelor apartments.

Other applications include severing land at 21291 Harbour Road in Wheatley to add four more residential lots and two more residential lots added at 15142 Longwoods Road just southwest of Bothwell next to a summer camp.

The applicant for the Wheatley lots at 21291 Harbour Road must also make sure the land is safe before any building permits are issued because it's very close to known wells and there's a potential for unknown wells.
